Can I use a pci-e x1 to x16 adapter to run dual video cards?

Question by gsquat: Can I use a pci-e x1 to x16 adapter to run dual video cards?
So they make those x1 to x16 adapters. Since I only have one x16 slot and an open x1 slot, I was wondering if I could run dual gpu’s with crossfire using the adapter. I know that it’s run at the x1 bus speed, but it’d still be a big improvement over one video card, right?

no and no………..thats as simple as i can put it ;0)

you need a compatible mobo/chipset to run crossfire even if you could do it the both cards would default to pci x1 and that really would be a bit sh!t ;0)

yuo could always get the 4870 x2 ATI card if your that bothered , make sure your psu is up to the task though

How can I identify memory cards for desktop computers?

Question by don_sv_az: How can I identify memory cards for desktop computers?
My roommate left a bunch of computer components behind when he moved out. Is there somewhere online that I can look up manufacturer’s part numbers or use pictures to identify the cards. I’d like to sell them and try to get back some of the $ 200 he woes me, but I need to know what I have in order to sell them effectively.

Sometimes, yes – It’s a process called ‘Reflowing’ where the solder on the board is let to melt and reset to repair loose connections.

But do *NOT* attempt this yourself. It is a massive fire risk, and requires extremely fine control of temperature and time. You can’t just bung it in an oven and expect not to have a smouldering mess out of it.

Help With Photo Recovery off Memory Cards?

Question by : Help With Photo Recovery off Memory Cards?
I want to retrieve deleted photos off my memory card, but I do not want to pay for all those expensive softwares. Is there any free software online I can download to have this feature? I own a Mac running Snow Leopard. Thanks!

Most card erasures are pretty permanent, hard drives and diskettes generally just set the BAM to ignore entries you delete, they aren’t usually physically erased, so with appropriate software you can re-find entries that aren’t any longer indexed there and recover them if they haven’t been over-written yet. Not certian this is the case with most cards.

What affordable graphics cards support the shader model 3 (SM3) and are vista compatable?

Question by mindspin311: What affordable graphics cards support the shader model 3 (SM3) and are vista compatable?
Looking for a new graphics card in the $ 100-$ 200 range (maybe up to $ 300 if absolutely neccessary) and I’ve heard many people talk about vista and new next gen games kinda needing this. The specs I’ve found on cards are sparse unless your paying $ 1 a MB for a 768mb card or something. Could anyone recommend something more affordable?
I was interested in the XFX GeForce 7600GT 256MB XXX 590Mhz graphics card (seemed to be the best for the price, but I don’t believe it utilizes sm3).
I think I will probably go with the Diamond Viper Radeon X1950 Pro CrossFire Ready (PCI-E, 512MB)

Found it under $ 200 on a few stores via cnet.. and it is vista ready but….

I like that the geforce 8600′s and 8800′s because they support directx 10.0

specifically the 8800 gts.. but not sure if it will work under vista

Going with a GeForce, (I do not touch ATIs because they are bad with free software), you need to get something in the 8000 series (8xxx). I think one of these should be good for you:

The more expensive one is, of course, quite a bit nicer.

I have never seen one there but that does not mean they do not, just seems unlikely. Every place you go you can find a walmart. I know they have camera memory cards and they will not be far from freeways and gas stations.

what are the pros and cons of each and which one would you recommend for a moderate gamer?

AGP is not commended since it’s old and will run slower then PCI-E cards.
There is a reason why 90% of all new cards are PCI-E only.

If I destroy the motherboard, memory cards, etc of a computer? Does it also destroy the data in it?

Question by greenconfidence: If I destroy the motherboard, memory cards, etc of a computer? Does it also destroy the data in it?
All that would be left would be the actual parts like the hard drive and monitor. I know there are other ways of deleting information, but I want to completely get rid of the memory cards and mother board. If I were to give the computer away, could someone slip in new memory cards or a new mother board and still acess info from the computer?

Best answer:

Answer by AJ
If you Destroy the HDD (Hard Disk) too then you’ll probably destroy the data.
