Question by Robert: What is the best way & equipment to speed up a network to share devices?
I need to share Maxtor 1TB & 2TB external hard drives between 2-4 desktop pcs. I found the only way to do this was to put the hard drives on the network.

I’ve tried using Network Magic and a Buffalo Tech 1 TB NAS hard drive, but they are both too slow. The Buffalo tech transferred a 4.4 GB dvd file in 12-13 minutes (same as reading/writing from a DVD disc), Network Magic about 45 minutes. USB takes 6 minutes, but obviously can only use one hard drive per pc and I need any or all pcs to be able to access all drives at any one time. I also found USB and Firewire switches, but as expected can only use one pc at a time.

All pcs are Windows Vista Ultimate, 4 GB RAM (Maxxed) with AMD 64 X2 Dual Core Processors 4200+. The network cards vary,,,one is a D-link and the other is onboard. Router is a Linksys WRT54GS with Speedboost.

So I’m wondering how I can speed transfer rates up or is that possible? Getting a better router and network cards are options I would use if I knew it would help. That and any adjustments. All will be hard wired into the router. nothing wireless.

I upgraded to a Linksys WRT350N (with storage link) router, 2 Linksys 10/100/1000 network adapter and Cat 5 cables.

Much to my disappointment the Storage Link is way too slow. It takes 45 minutes to transfer a 4.4 GB movie file (stored on a USB Maxtor 1TB drive plugged usb into the router, however I can hook the drive up usb in my 2nd computer and transfer it thru it, the router, to my first computer in 9-10 minutes. Go figure. Makes no sense to me.

I originally couldn’t do that but I used Network Magic and replaced my network adapters with Linksys 10/100/1000 and that alone made it faster going through 2 computers. I was hoping adding a Linksys 10/100/1000 router and Cat 6 cables would help with the storage link, but it didn’t. Looks like I will add hubs to each pc and just transfer back and forth that way for now. My next experiment would be to add a NAS Hard drive to see if it’s faster.

You need to replace your router and all of your network cards. You’re running a 100MB network, and you can upgrade to a 1GB network. Make sure you buy a router and network cards that support the 1GB transfer rate. For routers, the LinkSys WRT350N would work. Also, upgrade your network cables from Cat5e to Cat6 (Cat6 supports faster data transfer rates and better shielding from noise).

If you really need blazing fast speed and have the money to spend, consider setting up a file server with multiple network cards connected to a professional grade router (Cisco or equivalent).

Question by : How do you eject all devices connected to a usb hub on a mac?
i have a Belkin usb hub that i connect to my computer that has my external hard drive, my printer occasionally a thumbdrive and occasionally my ipod. how do i eject all of these devices at once instead of having to go through and eject them all manually.

Question by Deth f: My computer wont read any devices including flash drives and optical drives!?
One day i accidentally deleted my WoW game. i decided to reinstall but when i went to My Computer, there was no listing for either of my dvd drives. so i decided to DL it on my other computer and bring it over via flash drive. when i plugged in the flash drive it didnt say anything or have any listing.
it doesnt show up in device manager either. and btw my floppy drive still shows up.

right my computer->properties->hardware tab->device manager
see if u see any icon with a yellow “!”
if yes u need to reinstall the driver for it.

Is it possible to connect 3 USB devices (Keyboard + 2 printers) to 2 USB ports on the PC without using a USB Hub.
If you know if this is possible could you advise where this sort of cable can be baught.

You can do it with a multiplier dongle; but the power is split with each dongle; so the units may not work correctly. Better off getting a USB hub….

Question by Shane O: I’m having a problem with my USB hubs on some of my devices?
Hi there I’m having a huge problem with my USB hubs, when i conected one of the devices it keeps saying unknown device and no driver even though there is, It’s not just one USB hub it appears to be them all the only way i can use the 2 devices in questions is to keep removing and putting them back in untill it recognizes them which take ages and some times dosn’t work at all, The devices are working propally cause I tested them on another computer, The 2 devices are my Wi-Fi adapter and my Guitar Hero guitar which has a built in driver anyway, So if anyone has any ideas on whats the problem and how to fix it please let me know

roll back the driver for the usb ports on your system under device manager.

IDE drives use 4 pin Molex plugs. SATA uses a new type, which is a dedicated SATA power connector.

Question by M S: I moved my NVIDIA nForce ATA Controller to Storage Devices. How do I get it back to IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers?

I’ve uninstalled the device then Windows tells me to restart so I do and when my computer reboots it’s installed right back into Storage Devices. How do I get it to stop automatically re-downloading it to Storage Devices?

Try: uninstall the device, then have windows scan for new devices.

Question by : Do Microsoft wireless network adapters work with Verizon MIFI2200 devices?
I’m not sure if it would pick up the signal from my MIFI2200 device so I was thinking about getting the network adapter so I don’t have to hook my laptop up to my 360 to play Xbox Live all the time.

The Mifi2200 is a fully operational wireless router/access point. It’ll do anything that any other wireless AP would do. You should have no problem.

Question by hashman94: How do I get my computer to detect USB mass storage devices?
I have an HP Compaq d530t desktop computer. I recently encountered a problem with windows and i repaired XP with the CD. Now i cannot access my USB storage drives. Every other USB device works fine, i have tried various different mass storage devices, but no result, i have also tried them on different ports. Should i install some drivers?

Could someone please help me.

Your best try is to re-install the drivers for the usb ports and it there ports that are in the case check they haven’t been disconnected from the board
