Why are External Hard Drives cheaper than Internal Hard Drives now?
Question by C L: Why are External Hard Drives cheaper than Internal Hard Drives now?
I have seen several 1TB external hard drives with 7200 rpm for under $ 80 whereas a comparable internal hard drive is well over $ 100-$ 200. Usually the reasoning is the rpm is so low (normally around 5400), but that doesn’t seem to be the case. You can always just take the HDD out of the external casing and use it as internal, just wondering why the disparity? It used the be the other way around.

Are external hard drives basically big USB flash drives?
Question by : Are external hard drives basically big USB flash drives?
Do they transfer data from and to the computer the same way USB flash drives do, and do they do this with similar transfer speeds, or virtually no difference if any.
Also, if I have video files in the external hard drive, can I watch them from there by connecting it to the computer without actually transferring the files, like a CD/DVD?
I don’t have an external hard drive yet so that’s why I’m asking.

No, they are hard drives, the same as your “C” drive in your desktop, but in an enclosure and (usually) powered by a separate line. And yes, they show up in Windows Explorer as an external drive…you can watch movies, listen to music, do the same as you can on your main drive.

My optical drives are not showing in Windows 7?
Question by Jack: My optical drives are not showing in Windows 7?
How can I fix this? they were showing when I first got windows 7 last week but since yesterday they disappeared :[

Glitches, hiccups and burps – is what a new operating system from microsoft is all about.
Ensure that you’ve received all updates. Go to the Windows 7 page and report your issue – this OS is a Release Candidiate not the actually final release of the OS.

Just a short question about external hard drives?
Question by : Just a short question about external hard drives?
I’m just curious. I know for a fact. External hard drives won’t last forever. If an external hard drive breaks or fail or not working anymore. Can you still retrieve all of the data you have back up in that hard drive? Do you go to a specialist or something to collect all your data and you can put it to your new one perhaps? or all is lost.
Thank you in advance. I just want to know more.

Recovery of data from a broken drive is possible … but .. usually expensive … u can give it up to a hardware service station to get the files recovered …. but unless the files are REALLLY important i wouldnt recommend it …because .. even if u manage to recover the files.. they may get corrupt.
there are some applications available for this purpose too … again these are expensive to buy …. and … i wouldnt count on recovering files …. its expensive …and the results are not too good.
Your best option is to create a backup of the drive!

I am going to get a Lenovo Ideapad S10 but I wanted to know if they are compatible with Samsung external optical cd/dvd drives?

Yes. A computer with a USB port is compatible with a USB drive. The make of the computer and the make of the drive have nothing to do with compatibility.

Do Solid State Drives (SSD) Have A Maximum Number Of Write Cycles?
Question by Darth Revan: Do Solid State Drives (SSD) Have A Maximum Number Of Write Cycles?
I know with flash memory, there are a limited number of times that data can be written to it before it’s destroyed. Is this true about SSDs?
Best answer:
Answer by Shane M
Yes it is. They use the same technology as flash memory and they can only be written to so many times. But in reality, any good SSD will have a write-cyle limit that will last a very long time. After all, even standard hard drives have a maximum number of write cycles, in effect, since they all fail eventually.
