What is the best way & equipment to speed up a network to share devices?
Question by Robert: What is the best way & equipment to speed up a network to share devices?
I need to share Maxtor 1TB & 2TB external hard drives between 2-4 desktop pcs. I found the only way to do this was to put the hard drives on the network.
I’ve tried using Network Magic and a Buffalo Tech 1 TB NAS hard drive, but they are both too slow. The Buffalo tech transferred a 4.4 GB dvd file in 12-13 minutes (same as reading/writing from a DVD disc), Network Magic about 45 minutes. USB takes 6 minutes, but obviously can only use one hard drive per pc and I need any or all pcs to be able to access all drives at any one time. I also found USB and Firewire switches, but as expected can only use one pc at a time.
All pcs are Windows Vista Ultimate, 4 GB RAM (Maxxed) with AMD 64 X2 Dual Core Processors 4200+. The network cards vary,,,one is a D-link and the other is onboard. Router is a Linksys WRT54GS with Speedboost.
So I’m wondering how I can speed transfer rates up or is that possible? Getting a better router and network cards are options I would use if I knew it would help. That and any adjustments. All will be hard wired into the router. nothing wireless.
Thanks for the help and enjoy your Sunday.
Update:
I upgraded to a Linksys WRT350N (with storage link) router, 2 Linksys 10/100/1000 network adapter and Cat 5 cables.
Much to my disappointment the Storage Link is way too slow. It takes 45 minutes to transfer a 4.4 GB movie file (stored on a USB Maxtor 1TB drive plugged usb into the router, however I can hook the drive up usb in my 2nd computer and transfer it thru it, the router, to my first computer in 9-10 minutes. Go figure. Makes no sense to me.
I originally couldn’t do that but I used Network Magic and replaced my network adapters with Linksys 10/100/1000 and that alone made it faster going through 2 computers. I was hoping adding a Linksys 10/100/1000 router and Cat 6 cables would help with the storage link, but it didn’t. Looks like I will add hubs to each pc and just transfer back and forth that way for now. My next experiment would be to add a NAS Hard drive to see if it’s faster.
Thanks for the info.

You need to replace your router and all of your network cards. You’re running a 100MB network, and you can upgrade to a 1GB network. Make sure you buy a router and network cards that support the 1GB transfer rate. For routers, the LinkSys WRT350N would work. Also, upgrade your network cables from Cat5e to Cat6 (Cat6 supports faster data transfer rates and better shielding from noise).
If you really need blazing fast speed and have the money to spend, consider setting up a file server with multiple network cards connected to a professional grade router (Cisco or equivalent).

Can I use water with a computer liquid cooling system?
Question by undermississippiskies: Can I use water with a computer liquid cooling system?
I am planning on getting a liquid cooling system for a PC im building ( you know, cools the processor, other stuff). I know any cooling system needs a special coolant for best results, but could I use water as a safe substitute?
Thanks in advance

Answer by B U
Depends on how much heat the system generates — as long as your fluid is being cooled down sufficiently so as to not boil, then it really doesn’t matter all that much. The downside to water is that if something goes on your cooling system and everything gets wet — well, the end is obvious.
Make sure the equipment you buy is designed to be used with water, and there should be no issues.

Does anyone know a online store in the Philippines where I can buy computer equipment and accessories?
Question by KansasDragon: Does anyone know a online store in the Philippines where I can buy computer equipment and accessories?
I live in the USA and have a need to buy computer equipment for my families business in the Philippines. It is too expensive to buy here and ship, since the shipping costs are so high.
I can send them the money, and have them purchase, but being a tech, I really like to choose the items I’m going to try to support remotely.
Anyone know a good website in the Philippines for purchasing computer gear?

How do I use my Tivo with voip (wireless) without installing a router?
Question by letsdnce34: How do I use my Tivo with voip (wireless) without installing a router?
I have Tivo service and I don’t want to install a router. I have VOIP through wireless internet provider. What cable or equipment would I need to plug my tivo into something & dial up via voip? I have not seen an internet phone with an extra rj11 hook-up.
I have tried manually dialing the tivo #, but I can’t get the 2 modems in synch with each other over the VOIP connection, any suggestions?

This wont work. I use Packet8 VOIP and I tried this. The Tivo DVR uses an analog modem and cannot connect over a digital VOIP connection.

How does one view the notes on the computer screen while making a powerpoint presentation with a LCD projector
Question by nd1961: How does one view the notes on the computer screen while making a powerpoint presentation with a LCD projector
When i make a powerpoint presentation, i would like to read out from my notes. Apparently it is possible for the computer screen to show my notes section, while at the same time projecting the powerpoint slides. How does one do this? What are the commands?

Man, I’m sorry I don’t have all the equipment to try this out, but apparently, you want to go to File Menu>Slide Show>Set Up Show; from there, you are supposed to be able to set up your presentation so that your computer can show the view of the presentation in PowerPoint as a file while the projector shows only the slide show.
Copy/pasted from MS PowerPoint 2000′s help menu:
“Set up a slide show to run on a second monitor
Important You must be running the Microsoft Windows 98 operating system or Microsoft Windows 2000 operating system and have dual-monitor hardware in order to use this procedure.
Use this procedure to run a slide show on the full screen of a secondary monitor while you view the presentation in normal view on the primary monitor. This lets you see your outline and notes along with the slides, while your audience sees only the slides.
On the Slide Show menu, click Set Up Show.
In the Show on list, click the monitor you want the slide show to appear on.”
All I would/could add to this is that I’m sure if you have an OS more recent than 98 or 2000, you should still be alright [*smiles*].
Hope that helps.

How do you use O2 Broadband with other modems?
Question by IndieLover: How do you use O2 Broadband with other modems?
I have just signed up with O2 Broadband and it has been working fine with the 02 modem they gave me. But I then changed to a Belkin modem and the internet stopped completely. So is there a way of using 02 Broadband with other modems?
Best answer:
Answer by sewrobb
You’ll find now with most ISPs now that if they supply their own modems then only they can be used. It’s something to do with the chip coding inside them.
If it’s not the right code being transmitted from the modem to the ISP servers, then you wont get logged on. Their system, their equipment, their rules about connecting unauthorised equipment.

What technology is used to start a social networking site?
Question by mav-erick: What technology is used to start a social networking site?
A friend and I at school are planning to open a social networking site. We have the specifics charted out, and are on the lookout for people with computer skills to help us. We were wondering what computer equipment we might be needing initially. We have come up with a rough draft, listing 5 computers, 2 servers and database administrator software, but are unsure if these would suffice. We appreciate any help in this direction.

In all honesty it depends on what your target is. If you are looking at a myspace type thing you would of course need something A LOT larder than what you have lol. But for a small network that is good. What i would recommend though is that you go and check out the scripts that are floating around the net. They are a perfect place to start experimenting. just google “social network scripts”

No. They are intended as a one shot device. If they protected you from a surge they have done their job and protected your expensive equipment.

Razer Gaming Mice and Keyboard?
Question by Computer User: Razer Gaming Mice and Keyboard?
I play FPS’ such as Battlefield 2 and other games. I have a regular keyboard with nothing special, an optical mouse(right and left click+wheel), and a thermaltake mousepad. I usually have no problem with normal equipment, but the Razer company obviously assures I dont. Will this actually improve accuracy to a noticable point? *My sensitivity controls are default*
Also, is the gaming keyboard anything special? Ya, progrrammable buttons and such, but is their any performance advantage though?
Thanks in advance, it beats asking a salesmen. Otherwise im practically begging them to sell me something I dont need.
Best answer:
Answer by David N
In my opinion, yes to both. I have used a Razer gaming mouse from the time they came out with the first one. the advantage is that you can change the sensitivity on the fly and have other buttons you can program. Results in very accurate movements for sniping and weapons changes. I am now testing the Logitech G5 Mouse and the G15 key Board. Today I also ordered 2 more Razer Mice.
I have not used the Razer key Board yet. But the G15 is nice because the key board is easy to see in the dark, has programable buttons making multiple tasks easy and quick. It also has a flip up screen that gives you added info about your game play.
