Comparing Printers?
Question by jenniferwood75: Comparing Printers?
My husband and I are debating between two printers. Kodak Easy Share 5300 and Kodak – ESP 3 Multifunction Printer/ Copier/ Scanner. They are both mulit-function (which I hope you know already if you are attempting to answer) I compared the specs and other than an LCD screen and the second printing slightly slower I can’t find a difference. Can someone help me make an informed decision please. We are an average household and the idea of printing my pics at home apeals to me but I am no pro. Thanks to anyone who can help!

You have found out the difference between the two printers, speed and the LCD.
Personally I would look at the Canon Pixma MP line of printers or the HP Photosmart AIO printers over the Kodak as they offer better quality and you can get the printer cartridges from anywhere.

What is the best way & equipment to speed up a network to share devices?
Question by Robert: What is the best way & equipment to speed up a network to share devices?
I need to share Maxtor 1TB & 2TB external hard drives between 2-4 desktop pcs. I found the only way to do this was to put the hard drives on the network.
I’ve tried using Network Magic and a Buffalo Tech 1 TB NAS hard drive, but they are both too slow. The Buffalo tech transferred a 4.4 GB dvd file in 12-13 minutes (same as reading/writing from a DVD disc), Network Magic about 45 minutes. USB takes 6 minutes, but obviously can only use one hard drive per pc and I need any or all pcs to be able to access all drives at any one time. I also found USB and Firewire switches, but as expected can only use one pc at a time.
All pcs are Windows Vista Ultimate, 4 GB RAM (Maxxed) with AMD 64 X2 Dual Core Processors 4200+. The network cards vary,,,one is a D-link and the other is onboard. Router is a Linksys WRT54GS with Speedboost.
So I’m wondering how I can speed transfer rates up or is that possible? Getting a better router and network cards are options I would use if I knew it would help. That and any adjustments. All will be hard wired into the router. nothing wireless.
Thanks for the help and enjoy your Sunday.
Update:
I upgraded to a Linksys WRT350N (with storage link) router, 2 Linksys 10/100/1000 network adapter and Cat 5 cables.
Much to my disappointment the Storage Link is way too slow. It takes 45 minutes to transfer a 4.4 GB movie file (stored on a USB Maxtor 1TB drive plugged usb into the router, however I can hook the drive up usb in my 2nd computer and transfer it thru it, the router, to my first computer in 9-10 minutes. Go figure. Makes no sense to me.
I originally couldn’t do that but I used Network Magic and replaced my network adapters with Linksys 10/100/1000 and that alone made it faster going through 2 computers. I was hoping adding a Linksys 10/100/1000 router and Cat 6 cables would help with the storage link, but it didn’t. Looks like I will add hubs to each pc and just transfer back and forth that way for now. My next experiment would be to add a NAS Hard drive to see if it’s faster.
Thanks for the info.

You need to replace your router and all of your network cards. You’re running a 100MB network, and you can upgrade to a 1GB network. Make sure you buy a router and network cards that support the 1GB transfer rate. For routers, the LinkSys WRT350N would work. Also, upgrade your network cables from Cat5e to Cat6 (Cat6 supports faster data transfer rates and better shielding from noise).
If you really need blazing fast speed and have the money to spend, consider setting up a file server with multiple network cards connected to a professional grade router (Cisco or equivalent).

Network attached storage question?
Question by rhynorater: Network attached storage question?
how do i turn a second hard drive in a computer into NAS?
Best answer:
Answer by Grimace
You can simply make it a shared drive. Right click on the HD and select Properties. Then click on the Sharing tab. Select ‘Share this folder’ and then fill in the rest of the blanks as appropriate.
That won’t be pure NAS but it gets the job done. True NAS servers have their own operating systems and you usually have to install their client on the other network computers. I can’t see how that could be done on a second HD that’s already in a computer.

Question by Interested Dude: How many cable modems do I share my cable internet service with?
Is there any practicle way of telling how many other cable modems I am sharing bandwith with. The DHCP subnet would indicate that over 4000 ip’s are possible (255.255.240.0) and I can not imagine they waste many.

Use file share. its easy all you have to do is right click the drive and click properties then click the share tab then click share this folder then go to permissions and select the users you want to be able to access it. and select for them “Full Control” that way they can all copy files to and from it.

Share Outlook Calendar on Network Attached Storage?
Question by az_maui_girl: Share Outlook Calendar on Network Attached Storage?
Is it possible to share a calendar from Microsoft Outlook by putting it on out Buffalo Terrastation? If so, how do I set that up?
yes, I am using a POP account. I thought that the calendar would be a separate file that I could keep on the network and anyone could access and edit info on it. I do not have Microsoft Exchange.
Best answer:
Answer by Jeff B
You did not specify if you are using Outlook on a POP email account or using it connected to a Microsoft Exchange Server.
If in fact you are just using it on a POP email account, this is quite a difficult task.
Outlook stores all the emails/calendar and contacts in one file with the .PST extension.
You can move this file and allow other user’s with Outlook to open it, however no more than one person at one time can have it open.
If you are only updating your calendar once in a while, you can EXPORT your calendar to a file, and allow other Outlook user’s to IMPORT it.

Home Made Network Attached Storage (NAS)?
Question by GrandUser1000: Home Made Network Attached Storage (NAS)?
I do not have a server. However what do you think about the following idea.
What if I added extra hard drives to the bays of my PC and connect external hard drives to the USB ports on my PC, then share all the drives over my network.
Next create a batch script that would constantly repeat itself that copies files saved on one drive to another so therefore if one of the hard drives were to fail it still be saved on the other hard drives. Is this still considered a NAS? Do you think it would work?
This PC will serve as the main PC.

Answer by Peter C
No. It’s a file server. With frequent backups.
But what’s in a name? Does it do what you want at a price you’re happy with? Then it’s probably a good solution.
(Though I think the constant backups may kill performance. I probably wouldn’t do backup more often than every 5 minutes or so).
What do you think? Answer below!
how to connect to my desktops internet from my laptop?
Question by critik.santa: how to connect to my desktops internet from my laptop?
I got a laptop its using a wifi card and well my desktop is using a ISp called clearwire its wireless. And i cant connect to my desktops internet cause when i scan on my on my laptop it says clear wire. 89 percent signal but its encrypted so i cant connect how do i uncrypt it.
Best answer:
Answer by Jasper
clear encrypts its network so that you have to pay for your connection and decrypting it would be stealing. they probably have their network setup to find and report people who are attempting to crack it as well.
the only way would be to connect the two computers together by wire or by a second wireless card in the desktop.
you can do this using usb or firewire or ethernet.
when you have them connected phisically any of these connections can be used to make a LAN (local area network) depending on your experience level with this you may need help setting it up.
the easiest way to do this would be ethernet and a router. when you have this setup you can goto properties in the clear adaptor on the desktop and choose the option that says share this connection.
it might give you a choice of what device should be shared with it. (this should be the network that the laptop is connected to)
after that the laptop should be able to find the shared internet of the desktop.
you should be able to ask questions about routers and such at your local electronics store.
since you have clear i assume you are in portland. i think that frys electronics is the best place to buy around here, but the staff may not be as knowledgeable as they seem at any store so ask questions on yahoo about subjects that they bring up.
